Is Japan too rich for people to want to give it money, even as this most recent series of disasters looks all set to become the costliest in history? Some people think so. Publicist Michael Levine observed the following:
"I think celebrities, like all human beings to a larger degree, like feeling heroic...and there's a sense with third-world nations that you can be heroic. Japan is a very wealthy nation, so there's a feeling among some that money into Haiti or Africa is a different kind of poverty, a different kind of relief effort." - http://www.movieline.com/2011/03/why-hasnt-hollywood-rallied-for-japan-relief.php
In comparison, a number of Korean actors, singers and entertainment agencies have so far donated nearly $3,000,000 to the Japan relief efforts. Many of the donations were generously made by some of the country's leading stars, whose professional activities extend into Japan.
Japan is very much in need of all the kindness and generosity it has so far been bestowed, and all donations are appreciated and will help the survivors who have been hit the hardest by this immense tragedy. Thank you so much to those who have donated!
