STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Akiko Kosaka, 20, is from the tsunami-wracked village of Minami Sanriku, Japan
- More than half of that coastal town's 17,000 residents are missing
- For three days, she thought her family perished
- But then she saw her sister on YouTube sending a "we are all safe" message

Riverside, California (CNN) -- Akiko Kosaka, a student from Japan attending the University of California at Riverside, had lost all hope for her family in Minami Sanriku, the fishing village where more than half of the 17,000 residents are missing and feared dead in the aftermath of last week's tsunami.

For three days, she scoured the Internet. She received one e-mail that her youngest sister, Yukako, 13, was likely safe in her middle school's shelter. But what about her parents, paternal grandparents and older sister, who all lived under the same roof?
When the mayor was quoted in the media as saying he barely survived the tsunami, Kosaka thought the worst, because her father's pharmacy was located near the town hall.

"I didn't think they survived," Kosaka, 20, told CNN during a tearful interview Tuesday. "I cried for three days -- Friday, Saturday, Sunday."...

J-Friends: People of the World

'People of the World' is composed by Michael Jackson and sang by J-Friends to raise funds for Kobe earthquake. Kobe earthquake (6.8-magnitude) occurred on Tuesday, Jan.11th, 1995. Approximately 6,500 people lost their lives. The recent earthquake and tsunami are much more catastrophic than Kobe earthquake, so support and pray for Japan!
Everything will be alright.

**prayforjapan**世界から届いた日本への祈り

Human kindness and strength shine through most brightly during the darkest of hours

For those of you who can read Japanese, this is a really touching site:

-----

English Translation (from prayforjapan.jp on Facebook):

#Top "It's pitch dark but we've never seen so many beautiful stars. Look up, Sendai!" -conversation at the quake site. @smzasm

#1 Disneyland gave out sweets from their shops. Some high school girls got many as they can. I thought why, but they gave the sweets for children in evacuation site. That was really moving scene. @unosuke

#2 People buying things at scattering supermarkets, with picking up thing fell off, and making line to pay. Elder person who gave his seat to a pregnant mother, even in a crowded train which just started the operation. Foreigners sh...ocked by these sight. These must be real. Amazing, Japan. @kiritansu

#3 Comment from United Nations "Japan, the big supporting country, has done huge assistance all over the world. Next, we, united nations, assist Japan as much as possible." @akitosk

#4 So busy traffic. Only one car can go across the traffic light per one blue light, but I was moved to see people drive gently with giving their way. Some intersecions has been completly stopped for more than 5 min., but I...'ve neber heard any horn sounds except the sounds said "Thank you" for 10 hours. I was sceard, but also I've had warming time, and came to like Japan more. @micakom

#5 Last night, when I walked back to home from Campus, a female baker gave us bread for free, even if she has already closed the store. It was moving that I could find people who do things they can do in such loud situation. My heart became warm. Tokyo is not something dumped. @ayakishimoto

#6 I received an email from my Korean friend: "The only country to have experienced nuclear attacks. The country that lost the WWII. The country that suffers from typhoons every year and the earthquakes. However, isn't Japan the country that always stood up and overcame such difficulties? Gambare. Gambare." FYI, I am crying right now. @copedy

#7 Last night when I was tired out waiting for the train at the station, the homeless people gave me one of their cardboards to prevent the cold... even though we usually ignore them in daily life... So warm. @aquarius_rabbit

#8 (not done)

#9 (not done)

#10 (not done)

#11 (not done)

#12 My 2year old son was wearing shoes to go outside by himself. He said, "I'm going to arrest the earthquake!" The courage and sense of justice in himself inspired me. People, let us all stay strong and overcome this catastrophe. @hirata_hironobu

#13 While I was walking for 4 hours to get home, I saw a woman holding a sketchbook saying "feel free to use my rest room." She was providing her bathroom for people in public. Japan is such a warm country. I cried when I saw her and her sketchbook. @fujifumi

#14 When electricity goes out, water supply stops, the accident occurs at the nuclear power facilities, there are people fixing it. Know that they don't get fixed automatically. While we wait for the recovery, there... are people working outside. @yoh22222
