3/14-3/16 ASU+JC Paper Crane Making Fundraiser

Please keep your fingers crossed for Eriko Houlette DS '12

Early this week, I received an email from Eriko Houlette, a current Davis Scholar from Japan. Eriko has always been a member of Wellesley Japan Club - she did not only participate in the Yuki Matsuri '11 Choir, but also help many choir members to put on their Yukata on the day of performance.

The email itself was in response to Silent Charity Auction, an initiative by Japan Club for the earthquake relief. Eriko expressed her interest in donating for the Auction. Towards the end, she mentioned that she was planning to fly back to Japan since her hometown, Miyagi, was affected badly by the earthquake and the tsunami.

All the JC members were very touched by her generosity for the Silent Auction and her support to our initiatives, though her family members are among the suffering ones who need help most at this moment. JC, therefore, decided to use our profit money to buy something useful for her upcoming trip to Japan.

We did some research online on what the people there need most now. Fortunately, we found a website that provides a list of things that are needed. For those of you who are reading this blog now - this organization is accepting items listed and you can totally buy them and mail them over to support Japanese people in the affected areas! We, however, would also like to remind you to give a second thought on your way of support. There have always been many debates on whether to donate stuff or money to support areas that are affected by natural disasters. Many scholars and experts point out that donating money is usually more efficient. More importantly, it allows people to buy things they need locally, which stimulates the local economy and benefits the local employment environment. JC, nevertheless, decided to buy something useful for Eriko because she would be able to directly take them to where they are needed in very short period of time.

Based on the list we found, we purchased the following items:
energy bars
wet wipes
paper diapers
menstrual pads
dry shampoos (that don’t need water)
flash lights
batteries
sanitizers

The total amount is not a lot due to luggage constraints, but we really hope they will be useful for both Eriko and other people in her hometown. Please keep your fingers-crossed for her, a brave-hearted Wellesley women who decided to fly back to her hometown after the disaster. We sincerely wish her all the best.

Write a letter to raise spirits in Japan!

Urgent calling for letters to those in northeastern Japan!

Write a short letter in either English or Japanese to show your support!
This initiative was brought to Wellesley by Jessica Chin '11. Her friend, Masaki from Kyoto Sangyo University will be mailing them to the people in northeastern Japan where it was hit most by the earthquake and tsunami.

Letter collection deadline: 3/16 Wednesday

Instructions to participate:
1. Write a letter
It can be in Japanese or in English. You can leave the salutation blank, please write your name and 'Wellesley College'. The content just needs to be words of encouragement, just to let them know that they are being thought of, well-wished, prayed for, etc. Feel free to be as long or as brief as you want (within reason). You are also encouraged include a picture of yourself if you want to, or write something on the back of a photo. Japanese usually prefer handwritten since it will be more personable and will seem a little more sincere, but feel free to type up something as well.

2. Leave the address blank since Masaki is going to be handing the letters out. Feel free to write out your return address if you wish to, although if you'd rather not, that's fine too. If you don't have an envelope, that's fine, although it will be easiest if you do.

3. Give the letter to Jessica Chin. You can leave them outside her door (Shafer 409), or if it's easier, lightly write her name and mailbox in pencil somewhere visible (on its envelope/somewhere on the back of the letter) and throw it into campus mail (Unit 2828), and she will erase it before putting all of the letters into an envelope to send off.

It only needs to be one letter per person (although more would be welcomed!)

Message from Masaki:

Translation:
Students from Kyoto are gathering to write letters to those who have suffered due to the earthquake.
The letters should say something along the lines of “We’re in this together” to encourage people there.
We will take these letters to the affected areas.
Right now we are calling out to all the people we can reach all over the world.
I will take on the responsibility to send your letters to the places affected by the earthquake.
